Thermochemistry Flashcards
What is Thermochemistry?
the study of the energy changes that
accompany physical or chemical changes in
matter
What are the 3 changes that can occur in matter?
physical, chemical, or nuclear.
What is Potential Energy?
is described as stored energy, or energy ready to be
used.
What is Kinetic Energy?
is the energy of motion it’s ability to do work.
Nuclear Energy is ______
Energy Stored
within the nucleus.
Intramolecular Bonds
Bonds between
atoms within a
molecule.
Intermolecular Bonds
Bonds between
seperate molecules
ΔHc Heat of Combustion is ______
the energy released as heat when a compound undergoes complete combustion with oxygen under standard conditions.
Heat Capacity is _____
The amount of Heat needed to raise the
temperature of an object by one degree
Celsius
Specific Heat Capacity of Water?
4.186 J/g°C
How Does Calorimetry Work?
A BombCalorimeter is used to measure the heat created by a sample burned under an oxygen atmosphere in a closed vessel, which is surrounded by water, under controlled conditions (isolated system). The heat created by the combustion process is transferred into the surrounding water, and then the temperature change of the water is recorded.
Four Natural Forces are?
Gravity, Electromagnetic, Strong Nuclear and Weak Nuclear
Fission is ____
The splitting of large nuclei
Fusion is _____
The merging of two small nuclei (of Hydrogen)
ΔHr is ____
Enthalpy or Heat of Reaction is the difference in Enthalpy (Heat Content) of reactants (HR) and products (HP).
