Thermo 1 Flashcards
Drug-body interaction: what does ADME stand for?
Absorption; distribution; metabolism; excretion
Molecular vision of drug-body interaction include which three parts?
Dissolution; drug absorption/permeability; drug-target binding
Thermodynamics: what equation represent whether something will happen?
Delta G = delta H - T delta S
Delta G < 0 ?
Will happen
Delta G > 0?
Will not happen.
What is enthalpy?
- Interaction energy;
2. Internal energy.
What are the conditions considered by pharmacy students in thermodynamics?
- Constant temperature (body temp)
- Constant pressure (atmospheric pressure)
- Liquid phase (constant pressure ~ constant volume)
What does delta H = q mean?
The change in enthalpy is the same as the amount of heat given off or consumed during the process.
What kind of change in enthalpy is favorable?
Decrease
Drugs binding to protein targets is usually what kind of reaction?
. Exothermic reaction
How to measure heat?
Heat is related to temperature: add heat, temperature goes up, and vice versa.
The amount depends on heat capacity of a substance.
What are the two types of calorimetry?
- Old school coffee cup calorimeter;
2. Modern isothermal titration calorimeter (ITC)
What are two enthalpy interactions?
- Electrostatic interaction between positive and negative ions.
- Hydrogen bond.
What is the formula for entropy?
S = kb ln W
Kb = boltzmann’s constant W = # of configurations available to a molecule/object
Why do endothermic reactions happen spontaneously?
If enthalpy is going up (heat is consumed, temp goes down), something else must be driving the process. Which is entropy.
What kind of change in entropy is favorable?
Increase is a favorable process, bc there will be an increase in disorder.
