Thermo 1 Flashcards
What is an intensive property of a system
One that is independent of the mass of a system
E.g temp, pressure, density
What is an extensive property of a system
One that depends on the size (or extent) of the system
E.g volume, mass, ethalpy
What is an isothermal process
Work and energy are used up (expended) to maintain thermal equilibrium at all times
What is an isobaric process
One that takes place at constant pressure
What is an isometric (isochoric) process
One that happens at constant volume
What is an adiabatic process
One that doesn’t transfer heat or mass between the system and environment
What is a quasi-equilibrium process
One where the system remains infinitesimally close to equilibrium at all times
What’s the zeroth law of thermodynamics
If 2 systems are in thermo equilibrium with another system, they are in thermo equilibrium with each other
What’s the first law of thermo
Total energy of an isolated system is constant, law of conservation of energy
What is the second law of thermo
Heat can’t pass from a cold to warm body without another change
What is the third law of thermo
The entropy of system approaches a constant value as temp approaches zero
What is a saturated liquid
One that is about to vaporise
What is a saturated Vapor
One that is about to condense
What is the saturation temperature/pressure
The pressure/temp that a pure substance changes phase
What is a fluid that is not about to vaporise called
A subcooled or compressed liquid
