Thermal Physics Definitions Flashcards
Thermal capacity aka heat capacity
The energy require to raise the temperature of an object by 1 kelvin
Specific heat capacity aka specific thermal capacity
Thermal energy required to raise the temperature of a unit mass of a body by 1 kelvin
Internal energy
Sum of total kinetic energy and total potential energy of all molecules in a substance
Thermal energy
The energy transferred between two bodies
Specific latent heat of vaporisation
Convert a unit mass of liquid to vapour at a constant temperature and pressure
Specific latent heat of fusion
Amount of thermal energy required to convert a unit mass of a solid into a liquid at a constant temperature
Temperature
A measure of how hot a body is aka a measure of the kinetic energy of the molecules measured on a defined scale e.g. Kelvin or Celsius
