Thermal Physics Flashcards
What is Charles’ Law?
Volume and temperature are proportional
When pressure is constant
What is Boyle’s Law?
Pressure and volume are inversely proportional
When temperature is constant
What is the pressure law?
Pressure and temperature are proportional
When Volume is constant
What is an ideal gas?
A gas composed of moving, non-interacting point particles. The has obeys the ideal gas equation.
What happens to particle speed as the temperature increases?
Average particle speed and maximum speed increase
What is the specific heat capacity of a substance?
The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of the substance by 1 degree.
What is the specific latent heat of fusion or vaporisation?
The amount of thermal energy needed to cause 1kg of a substance to change state.
What are the energy changes in gas?
Particles will travel with different Ek’s and their Ek will change as a result of collisions. Between collisions they do not accelerate.
Total energy of gas is constant
So average speed will stay the same provided that the temperature is the same.
