Thermal Physics Flashcards
What is internal energy?
The sum of the potential and kinetic energies of a systems
How can you increase the thermal energy of a system?
. Doing work on the object
and/or
. Transfer heat to the system
Explain the energy changes that occur during a change of state
All of the heat transferred is being used to overcome intermolecular forces within the molecules.
So internal energy increases at the same rate but the particles kinetic energy during a change of state don’t increase.
What is the equation for specific heat capacity
Q=MC * Change in Temperature
What is the equation for the energy for a change of state
Q=M * specific latent heat
How do you calculate the change in internal energy at any given temperature
U = MC * Change in temperature + M* latent heat
if multiple changes of state occur then multiple M* latent heat needs to be accounted for
What is the first law of thermodynamics
Whenever a mechanical force expends energy from 1 system ,an exact equivalent of heat energy is always obtained by another or multiple systems
What is the specific heat capacity of a substance
The energy to required to raise the temperature of 1kg of substance by 1 kelvin without a change of state
What is the specific latent heat of a substance
The energy required to change the sate of a substance per unit mass, while the temperature is kept constant
