Thermal Physics Flashcards
What is conduction?
Vibrating particles transfer energy to neighboring particles
Particles move faster and collide more with their neighboring particles causing the neighboring particles to movfe faster. As the repeats, the heat is spread out evenly.
Why is there only conduction is solids?
More dense particles lead to more collisions
Give examples of solids with low and high thermal conductivity.
Metals
Liquids and plastic
What is a convection current?
Convection Current is defined as “a process of continuous heating up of liquids or gases by the process called as Convection.
What do conduction and convection have in common?
They both involve particles gaining kinetic energy
What is radiation?
When energy is carried by infrared waves. Objects emit and absorb radiation.
The hotter an object is = the more radiation.
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is a type of vaporization that occurs on the surface of a liquid as it changes into the gas phase.
What is boiling?
Boiling is the rapid vaporization of a liquid, which occurs when a liquid is heated to its boiling point, the temperature at which the vapour pressure of the liquid is equal to the pressure exerted on the liquid by the surrounding atmosphere.
What is heat?
A form of energy measured in jewels
What is heat capacity?
The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a material by 1o celcius
What is specific heat capacity?
The amount of heat needed to raise 1kg of a substance by 1oC
Energy transferred formula
Specific Heat capacity x mass x temperature change
What are characteristics of solids?

Strong Forces of Attraction
Fixed position
Vibrates when heated
What are characteristics of a liquid?
Undefined shape, defined volume

What are the characteristics of a gas?
Undefined shape, undefined volume
Very Weak forces of Attraction
