Thermal Energy And Heat Flashcards
Define convection. Also list two examples
Convection is the transfer of heat through fluids such as water and gases.
For example, a water heater warming a house, or water boiling on a stove.
Define radiation. Also list two examples
The transfer of energy through electromagnetic waves.
Examples: The sun warming the earth, fire warming a house.
Define conduction. Also list two examples
Conduction is heat transfer through touching.
Example: Touching a hot pot handle, or touching a hot metal rod.
Define temperature
Temperature is the measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in matter
What is the freezing point of Fahrenheit?
32 degrees
What is the boiling point of Fahrenheit?
212 degrees
What is the freezing point of Celsius?
O degrees
What is the boiling point of Celsius?
100 degrees
Define thermal equilibrium
Thermal equilibrium is what happens when two object of different temperatures are touching each other and reach the same temperature.
Define heat
Heat is thermal energy from a matter at a higher temperature to a lower temperature.
Heat always transferred which way?
Heat is always transferred from hot temperatures to cold temperatures.
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, liquid, and gases.
What is the shape and volume of solids.
Solids molecules are close together and can only vibrate because they are close together. They cannot take the shape of a container.
What is the shape and volume of liquids?
Liquids are father a part then solids and can take the shape of a container.
What is the shape and volume of gases?
Gases spread apart as much as possible. They have no correct volume of shape unlike solids or liquids
