Thermal Energy Flashcards
Thermal energy
Energy a substance or system as related to its temperature
Specific energy
Energy per unit mass also called energy density more precisely means energy per unit volume
Heat
The quality of being hot ; high temperature
Conduction
Heat or electricity is directly transmitted through a substance when there is a difference of temp. Or of electrical potential between adjoining regions ,without movement of the material
Convection
Within a fluid by the tendency of hotter and therefore less dense material to rise ,and colder, transfers to heat
Radiation
Electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles especially high energy particles that cause ionization
Thermal insulator
1.transferring of heat
Solar collector
Heating buildings or water or the production of electricity
Thermodynamics
The branch of physical science that deals with the relations between heat and other forms of energy such as mechanical electrical or chemical energy
1st law of thermodynamics
Energy that can be transformed from one another but can’t be created or destroyed
2nd law of thermaldynamics
The entropy of the world only increases and never decreases
Temperature
Measure of the average kinetic energy of all the particles that make up an object
