what is theravada buddhism?
•a strong monastic tradition, relating to monks and nuns living under religious vows
•they believe that their teachings come directly from the historical buddha
what are bhikkhus?

what are the four parajikas?
•the four defeats
•rules that entail the expulsion (forced to leave) from the monastic order. if a monk or nun breaks one of these rules he/she is automatically defeated in the holy life and falls from monk-hood immediately
the 4 parajikas include:
~sexual intercourse
~stealing
~intentionally brining out the death of another human being
~deliberately lying to another person
what are the 13 sanghadisesas?
•rules that entail the meeting of the sangha
•if a monk breaks one of these rules he has to go through a period of probation, if he shows himself to be repentant, he may be reinstated by the sangha
some of the 13 sangadisesas include:
~discharge of semen expect while dreaming
~lustful bodily contact with a woman
~making lustful remarks towards a woman
~requesting sexual favours from a woman
~arranging for a date, affair, or marriage between a man and a woman
~building a hut without permission
~having someone else build a hut for you without permission
what is the dasa sila?
there are 5 moral precepts in which all buddhists use, which include:
~refrain from killing living creatures
~refrain from stealing
~refrain from sexual misconduct
~refrain from incorrect speech e.g swearing
~refrain from intoxicating drink or drugs in which lead to carelessness
however there is an additional 5 for the monastic sangha
~refrain from eating at a forbidden time
~refrain from dancing and singing
~refrain from beautifying the body with cosmetics/garlands/perfumes
~refrain from sleeping on a high or luxurious sleeping place
~refrain from accepting money
what is the patimokka?
the basic code for discipline for the monastic sangha, consisting of 227 rules fit bhikkhus, and 311 for bhikkhunis
what is the sangha?
in buddhism, sangha refers to the monastic communities of bhikkhu (monks) and bhikkhuni (nuns)
what is the pali canon?
standard collection of scriptures in theravada buddhism
