Q

What is the first component of CBT?

A

Dysfunctional Thought Diary
This is a form of homework that the client has to complete between sessions.
It aims to gain insight into dysfunctional thoughts and help change them into more rational ones.
The client first writes down a thought/response they had to a certain situation or event. They then rate how much they believe in that thought (0-100%).
They then have to write down an alternative more rational thought to the same event. They then rate how much they believe in the dysfunctional thought (this should have decreased).

Q

What is the second component of CBT?

A

Cognitive Restructuring
It works by breaking down the faulty thought processes (identified via DTD) and rebuilding new rational ways of thinking.
Empirical Disputation is where the client has to provide evidence for their dysfunctional thoughts. When they realise they can’t find any they realise there thought processes are faulty.
They can then work with their therapist to build up new rational ways of thinking.

Q

What is the third component of CBT?

A

Pleasant Activity Scheduling.
This is the behavioural part of CBT.
They client has to plan a pleasant activity for them to do everyday to distract them from their negative thoughts and build up more positive thoughts.
It helps to rebuild a positive cognitive triad.
The client gradually changes their behaviour and their negative way of thinking.

Q

What is a positive of effectiveness of CBT?

A

It treats serious psychological disorders.
Kuipers et Al studied 60 patients with medication resistant Sz and randomly allocated them into either a CBT + standard care group or just standard care alone. 9 months later, 50% of the CBT group had improved compared to 31% in the other group.
1 person in the CBT group for worse compared to 3 in the other group and 1 person commited suicide.
- Therefore CBT is effective in treating Sz whereas medication is unsuccessful and it stops the patients getting worse.

Q

What is a negative of effectiveness of CBT?

A

CBT is not effective when the input is a realistic stressor.
Simon’s found that sometimes the cause of mental disorders is traumatic life events not dysfunctional thinking.
Therefore it may be the bodies natural response to a realistically stressful situation where its not possible to think of it differently.
