Therapeutic Modalities Flashcards
What is conduction?
Give an example.
Direct contact
Ex: ice pack / hydrocollator pack
Why do we use therapeutic modalities?
- Increase / decrease circulation
- increase / decrease muscle and nerve excitability
- reduce pain
- maintain / increase muscle tone
- increase extensibility of collagen tissue
What is convection?
Give an example.
Movement of fluids or gases over or across the body.
Ex: whirlpool
What is radiation?
Energy through space
What is conversion?
Give an example.
Heat produced from another energy form.
Ex: ultrasound
What are two types of thermal therapeutic modalities?
Cryotherapy (Cold) and Thermotherapy (Heat)
What are some examples of cryotherapy?
- Ice pack
- Flexible cold pack
- whirlpool
- vaporcoolants
What are some examples of thermotherapy?
- hydrocollator pack
- Infrared lamp
- whirlpool
- parafin
- fluidotherapy
In a whirlpool, what are the temperature ranges for:
Hot?
Cold?
Hot: 98-104*
Cold: 50-60*
How long should you perform an ice massage and what radius should you stay within?
5-10 mins
4-6 inch radius
How long should you keep on an ice pack/hydrocollator pack?
20-30 minutes
Name types of mechanical modalities.
Massage
Traction
Intermittent Compression
Joint Mobilization
What is a massage?
Manipulation of soft tissue
Why do we massage?
Mechanical responses
Physiological responses
Psychological responses
Why do we use traction?
Separates joint surfaces
Relieves pain/pressure on nerve roots
Allows disc material to move back to the center of the disc
What are different ways of performing traction?
Manual
Machine or mechanical
Positional
What is intermittent compression?
A nylon sleeve that fills with air or fluid to apply pressure to an injured area, thus reducing swelling.
Why do we use intermittent compression?
Control or reduce swelling after an acute injury
Reduce pitted edema
What are some types of intermittent compression?
Cry-cuff: cold and compression
Jobst Compression: pressure only
Game Ready System: Uses a soft wrap that conforms to the body
Why do we do joint mobilizations?
To increase accessory motions about a joint.
