Therapeutic Intervention Flashcards
Adjunctive Methods
o Procedures that prepare the clients for occupational performance but are preliminary to the use of performance skills
o May include exercises for increasing ROM, strength, endurance, the use of physical agent modalities, the use of orthotics and positioning
Enabling Activities
o Methods used as a step toward the ability to perform purposeful activities
o May include stacking cones, peg boards, and other task designed to simulate certain activities
Purposeful Activities
o Activities used to enhance performance skills, and ultimately, resume occupational role
o May include the actual activity such as in ADLs (dressing, eating, grooming) hobbies, or simulated version of these
o May include the use of adaptive equipment to enable the to do the activity
Therapeutic Exercise
Use of bodily movement or muscle contraction to correct an impairment, improve musculoskeletal function, and maintain a state of well-being
Usually repetitive and not purposeful in nature
* Adjuntive or prepatory
* It is often the aim of therapeutic exercise to prevent or correct substitution patterns
* It cannot be used effectively with those who have spasticity and/ or lack voluntary control of isolated muscle movement; also important that sensory feedback be available
Therapeutic Activity
- Arts, crafts, recreational, sports, leisure, self care, home management, and work related activities that may be used or adapted for use to meet on or more therapeutic objectives
- Purposeful activities, other than arts and crafts, used in treatment programs include ADL’s such as self-care, travel, communications, and home management activities; also simulated work or actual job samples; and leisure activities
