Theory Paper Flashcards
Hygiene? Personal and Environment?
You need to keep a clean and tidy appearance
You need to keep a clean and sterile clubhouse- which is a team effort.
What are the hazards to SLS members in the surf environment?
The sun Hypothermia Hyperthermia Dehydration Infectious diseases Alcohol in blood
Identify two ways SLS protects its members
Providing policy statements (specific procedures that help ensure safety) for things such as body recovery IRB specifications Lifeguard refreshers Injuries Shark safety
Ways to reduce injuries to members or visitors to your SLS club
Maintaining a Serious Injury Register- the data which is then incorporated into reviews
Risk management practices. Swimming only when it’s safe keeping people inside the flags warning people of rips
Name ways a lifeguard can protect themselves on the beach
Wearing a hat Wearing weather appropriate clothing Staying hydrated Wearing gloves/masks if dealing with first aid and keeping a sterile first aid room Not having alcohol in blood
What does the POM describe
The patrol systems used
Contact information
Everything needed for patrols and lifesaving
Who is responsible for updating the POM
The club captain
Give an example of information that directly affects patrolling of the beach
Patrol documentation (all the forms for the beach)
Why do we wear uniform?
So the public is aware of the patrollers and their status
So lifeguards can be easily identified
Why is a good public perception of lifeguards important for SLS?
For their reputation- public will trust lifeguards more
When should you not wear your patrol uniform?
On the beach as a civilian
In public away from beach
At school
What are the patrol forms?
1. Patrol captain’s Records the people on beach Weather Actions and equipment Any rescues 2. Incident Record of every rescue search and first aid 3. Patient Details of any major rescue 4. IRB operations log Must be completed for every IRB used and issues and stuff
If your club has an ATV what must you have to drive it
A motorbike or drivers license A helmet And you must have 1. First aid kit or resuscitation equipment 2. Rescue tube and swim fins 3. Handheld radio
Describe what to do if you were the first to see the incidents below
Water based
Land based
Cliff
Water: Inform other patrollers about incident using PPPP. Assess situation before entering water.
Land: alert those with highest first aid level.
Cliff: contact police and ambulance immediately.
Missing persons?
Obtain maximum information Ask: Last known point Did you see the person submerge if they were in the water Age/gender/height/clothes/complexion Keep informant with you Alert PC Contact police if they can’t find the MP
What is a wave and how is it formed
A body of water moving along water surface. Formed by pressure on the ocean and affected heavily by winds tides and storms
What is VFD?
VELOCITY How hard it blows DURATION How long it blows FETCH the distance it blows
Wave types?
Spilling is When the top of the wave spills onto the face
Dumping is when the wave breaks with massive force and could throw swimmers to bottom
Shorebreak
When there is a bar of sand. It is a dumper that can easily throw swimmers into the sand harshly
Surging
May not break. Common around rocks. Forceful pressure.
What is the tide
Alternate ride and fall of sea’s surface
What is a rip tide
A rip (forceful water pull) created by the tide coming in or out
In what ways can tides be dangerous
Creating holes, catching young children playing in the sea, making bigger waves, creating rips
How does the tide affect waves on your beach
High tide= more water= bigger waves
Name four identifying features of a rip
Foamy water
Debris
Calm patches
Criss cross
Permanent rip?
A stationary rip that will be there forever though can wane and wax with ocean intensity
