Theory Of Natural Selection Flashcards
Observation 1:
Over breeding - organisms produce large numbers of offspring.
Observation 2:
Population numbers remain constant - the number of organisms of the same species (population) will continue to increase until the environment can no longer support them. Then, the number of organisms stays the same.
Observation 3:
Inherited variations occur in populations - the members of the population/ species show genetic differences from sexual reproduction or mutations.
Conclusions 1:
There is a struggle for existence. More offspring and limited resources will cause competition for scarce resources. Animals compete for food, water, shelter, and mates. Plants compete for space, light, water, and minerals.
Conclusions 2:
Those organisms that have variations that enable them to adapt better to their environment will survive and reproduce and pass their variations onto the next generation.
