Theory of Flight Flashcards
What is parasite drag
drag caused by parts of the plane not contributing to lift
what are the 3 types of parasite drag
form drag
skin friction
interference drag
what is form drag
drag created by the shape of the body as it resists motion through air
what is skin friction
air flowing over a body that tends to cling to its surface
what is interference drag
drag created by areas where parts meet at a right angle (wing to fuselage, etc.)
what play happen to the load factor if there is sudden movement in a steep angle bank?
the load factor may exceed design limits
What happens to centre of pressure as angle of attack increases
moves forward
what is aspect ratio
wing’s span divided by wing’s chord
high aspect ratio
low induced drag, high parasite drag
what do flaps do to camber
increase camber and therefore lift
how to calculate stall speed in a turn
Vs turn = Vs x square root of load factor
