Theory of continental drift / plate tectonics & landform regions Flashcards
What builds up the earth surface?
The volcanic and tetonic processes build up the earths surface
What is a subduction zone?
Process of a heavier plate subsiding and melting back into the mantle
What is a continental collision
when both plates are equally dense, causing mountains from crashing into eachother
What is a transforming boundary?
when two plates slides against eachother causing earthquakes
What is a divergent boundary?
when 2 forces push plates apart
- builds ridges & mountains
(mid atlantic ridge)
What is a convergent boundary?
when currents push together
- forms trenches
What are the three different types of Boundarys?
Divergent, Convergent, & transforming
What are the three different types of plate tectonics?
Colliding, Diverging & Transforming
What is pagnea?
the combination of all continents together
Who had a theory of continetal drift and when?
Alfred Wegener, 1912
What was the 1st piece of evidence for the theory of continental drift?
- jigsaw puzzle/connection between south america & africa
!! THE PERFECT MATCH
What was the 2nd piece of evidence for the theory of continental drift?
- same fossils between two same continets
What is the 3rd piece of evidence for the theory of contidental drift?
- both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, rocks that formed mountains were the same both in terms of age and structure
What is the 4th piece of evidence for the theory of contidental drift?
- ice sheets covered parts of Africa,
India,
Australia,
and South America
over 250 million years ago.
How is this possible in area with such hot climates?
