Theory Exam 1: Setups Flashcards
What experiment is this setup from?
Simple distillation experiment
–> Utilized to distill an acetone and butanol mixture
What experiment is this setup from?
Myristic Acid Synthesis
This is a REFLUX setup
–> Used to reflux the trimyristin with KOH to produce myristate
What is this?
In what experiments did we use this?
Vacuum Filtration Setup
We used vacuum filtration in:
1) Myristic Acid Synthesis (to collect the myristate from the reflux mixture)
2) Benzoic Acid Crystallization (the final step to collect the benzoic acid crystals)
What is this? What experiment is it from?
HOT FILTRATION
Benzoic acid crystallization –> Used to separate out the insoluble contaminants from the benzoic acid and soluble impurities
What is this? What experiment is this from?
Gravity Filtration
Extraction of trimyristin experiment
–> Used to separate the insoluble impurities from the trimyristin-ether mixture (remove the cell components, husk pieces, etc.)
What is this? What experiment is this from?
Rotary Evaporation
Extraction of trimyristin experiment
–> Used to evaporate out the diethyl ether from the nutmeg-ether mixture, leaving behind CRUDE TRIMYRISTIN!
Why did we do this?
In the extraction of trimyristin experiment, we had to recrystallize the crude trimyristin to purify the extract
To do so, we added acetone to the crude product. Acetone dissolves the soluble impurities but NOT trimyristin. SO in this image, we pipetted out the supernatant containing the acetone and the soluble impurities.
What was this from? And why?
In the synthesis of myristic acid experiment, this was the final step in which we separated the myristic acid from the myristate contaminating it.
This filter column let the ligroin + myristic acid pass through but caught the myristate in the celite
–> This purified the myristic acid product!
