The types of questions will combine definition and description of what the topic/process is, along with identification of what it is used for. Examples may also be required.
Explain
To give reasons (explain why) or to describe something so that it can be understood (explain how)
Needs to be a clear connection between the description and the reasoning. This can be done using word like ‘because,’ ‘therefore,’ and ‘as a result of’
Explain why
Often requires a description of what is done, how it is done, and reasons why it is done that way
Explain how
Often requires a detailed description of what is done and how it is done or how it works
Apply
To use relevant knowledge in a new context
Most likely to appear as ‘how’ and ‘why questions; will focus on the ability to make connections between options and product in a given context
Compare
To identify similarities and differences
