When can you overtake on the left?
You can overtake on the left when:
The vehicle ahead is turning right
If you are turning left immediately after overtaking In slow moving lanes of traffic
At an uncontrolled junction of equal importance to whom would you give the right away?
Traffic on your right or traffic already in the junction.
What is a box junction and what rules apply?
Area marked with criss-cross yellow lines meaning you may not enter unless your exit is clear. You may wait in the junction if you are turning right providing you would not cause an obstruction.

Proceed if the crossing is clear but pedestrians still have the right of way.

What does a continuous white line/lines in the middle of the road mean?
You must not cross the line/lines or park opposite.
What does a continuous white line with a broken white line alongside mean?
Overtaking allowed on the broken side only.
What does a continuous yellow line at the side of the road mean?
No parking during certain hours.
What do double continuous yellow lines mean?
No parking at any time.
What does a broken yellow line mean?
It marks the edge of the road or hard shoulder.
What do white zigzag lines mean and where would you see them?
No stopping, no parking or overtaking on approach to a pedestrian crossing.
How would you know you were entering a one-way street from the wrong end?
No entry sign, no entry on road and continuous white line with a broken white line behind.
Where would you stop if a stop sign did not have
a white line?
At the sign.

Each side of the island is a separate crossing.
When can you drive in the hard shoulder?
Temporarily to let someone overtake providing the hard shoulder is clear.

A distance of no more than 4.5 metres.

Pedestrians, animals, muddy surfaces,
concealed entrances, slow moving farm machinery etc.

Increase your speed.

In a one-way street, where there is a continuous white or where a sign directs you not to do.
What is a contra flow bus lane?
A bus lane running in the opposite direction to the traffic which may never be used by other vehicles.
What is a with flow bus lane?
A bus lane running in the same direction as the traffic and may not be used at certain times during the day.
What is meant by tailgating?
Driving too close to the vehicle in from i.e. not keeping the stopping distance.
What are the main factors that can afflict your driving?
Alcohol, drugs (prescription and non prescription), tiredness and fatigue, road rage, and other forms of aggression.
When may you use the outside lane of dual carriageway?
When overtaking or when intending to turn right a short distance ahead.
What does a red triangle indicate?
Dangerous hazard i.e. accident or vehicle breakdown.
What is coasting and why is it potentially dangerous?
Coasting is when the vehicle is not being driven by the engine i.e. the clutch pedal is held down or the gear lever is in neutral. It is dangerous because it reduces the drivers control of the vehicle, particularly breaking and steering.
Also, if anything unexpected happened it could be difficult to engage gear.
How far away from a pedestrian crossing must you be if you are crossing the road without using the crossing?
Not within the zigzag lines or in their absence 15 metres from the crossing
Seat belts-who is responsible?
16 years old or under - the driver is responsible - over 17 years the person themselves.
Where should you not overtake, give such instances?
At a bend, the brow of a hill, a humpback bridge, at a continuous white line, at a pedestrian crossing or anywhere your view is obstructed.
