What is mental illness?
It is an alteration in occupational, social, physical, or mental function the degree of which is a continuum between illness and health.
What are the components of the DSM-IV-TR? Include a description and example of each.
Axis I - Clinical Disorders - Major Depressive Disorder
Axis II - Personality Disorder and Mild Mental Retardation - OCD, paranoid personality disorder
Axis III - General medical - HTN, DM
Axis IV - Psychosocial/Environmental - Divorce, Loss, Homelessness
Axis V - Global Assessment of Function - scale of 1-100 where 100 is highest functioning and 1 is no functional ability
What are two roles an advanced practice RN can perform?
Write prescriptions
Psychotherapy (talk therapy)
What are the 6 primary patient rights?
Right to be treated Right to refuse treatment Right to informed consent Right to advanced psychiatric directives Right to least restrictive restraint or seclusion Right to confidentiality
What are the 2 main (broadest) categories of mental disorders?
Neurosis - describes anxiety
Psychosis - distortion of reality
What are the types of admissions to mental health facilities?
Informal - can come and go as they choose, even against AMA
Voluntary - admit themselves, can attempt to leave but can be converted to involuntary by doctor order
Involuntary - Requires petition by someone 18 yrs or older, 2 certificates from physicians, held for 60 days, patient can petition court for release
What are some precautions?
Self harm - SP1 - suicide prevention - one to one - SP2 - suicide prevention - monitor Q15 min - DBS - destructive behavior to self - SIP - one to one Elopement Combative Substance abuse Fall risk
