theories of the family - new right Flashcards
why don’t the new right like family diversity?
they believe problems such as mental illness or criminals comes from single parents or broken families.
what do the new right think about the welfare state?
encourage laziness and lack of personal responsibility with benefits for single parents or the unemployed.
2 reasons the NR dislike single parent families?
children need male and female role model for effective socialisation, single parents cost too much in welfare benefit.
6 causes the NR believe cause changes in family structure?
breakdown in traditional values such as gender roles, overgenerous welfare benefits so fathers opt out of responsibilities, rise in feminism which has devalued marriage, increased sexual permissiveness, secularisation, tolerance of lgbtq.
consequences of changes in the family?
failing to provide adequate socialisation, underperformance in school, antisocial behaviour, criminality.
what happens to single mothers on benefits?
they become dependent and “married to the state”. find it too difficult to come off benefits.

it is a nanny state doing too much for individuals.
who came up with the phrase underclass?
Murray.
what is the underclass?
illegitimacy creates culture of inadequate socialisation lacking male role model. results in criminals.
who talks about without fathers?
Dennis and Erdos.
what do Dennis and Erdos say?
children born to single mothers are at disadvantage. poorer health and lower attainment. boys assume they will have no responsibilities and so grow up anti social. families are deteriorating.
AO3- 2 strengths of new right views?
recognises impact of long term dependence on benefits. offers some practical solutions to deal with welfare dependency.
AO3 - 3 weaknesses of new right?
ignore that many nuclear families don’t socialise kids properly. if benefits cut, children will suffer. only 10% of mothers not in contact with baby dad lived in council housing 6 months after birth.
AO3 - feminism on new right?
sexist attitudes towards women. many mens’ wages aren’t enough to survive off so women need to work.
what does Murray say about cohabiting couples?
they aren’t as stable as married couples.
