Satisfaction Level - the extent to which the rewards exceed the costs
Comparison with Alternatives - judgement concerning whether a new/no relationship would bring more rewards and fewer costs
Investment Size - the extent and importance of the resources associated with the relationship
Define Intrinsic Investment
Resources we directly put into the relationship - can be tangible or less quantifiable
Define Extrinsic Investment
Resources that didn’t previously feature in the relationship, includes possessions
How can you predict that partners will be committed according to Rusbult’s Investment Model?
When there are high levels of satisfaction b/c alternatives will be less attractive & investment size is large
What are the 4 Relationship Maintenance Mechanisms in Rusbult’s Investment Model? Briefly define them.
1) Accommodation - acting to promote the relationship
2) Willingness to sacrifice - putting their partner’s interests first
3) Forgiveness - forgiving them for serious transgressions
4) Ridiculing Alternatives - being negative about tempting alternatives & others’ relationships (Cognitive Element)
According to Rusbult’s Model, why do dissatisfied partners stay in their relationship?
They are committed b/c they made an investment that they don’t want to waste, so they will work hard to maintain and repair the relationship
