Theories of Punishment Flashcards
Retribution
the theory that criminals should pay for their crime.- it makes criminals pay for their crime in proportion to the severity of the crime committed. -it makes criminals suffer for what they have done wrong, just as their victims suffered.
Deterrence
the punishment should put other people off committing crime. - the idea of deterrent punishment is that the punishment should be so severe nobody would dare commit crimes. E.g. the death penalty for murder.
Reform
criminals should be taught not to commit crime again
- this attempts to reform the criminal into becoming a law-abiding citizen.
- this often includes giving criminals an education in order to help them get a job, so they no longer turn to crime.
Protection
this should protect society from criminals and their activities.
- capital punishment is good for murderers as they cannot murder again etc..
