A

the theory that criminals should pay for their crime.- it makes criminals pay for their crime in proportion to the severity of the crime committed. -it makes criminals suffer for what they have done wrong, just as their victims suffered.

Deterrence

A

the punishment should put other people off committing crime. - the idea of deterrent punishment is that the punishment should be so severe nobody would dare commit crimes. E.g. the death penalty for murder.

Reform

A

criminals should be taught not to commit crime again

  • this attempts to reform the criminal into becoming a law-abiding citizen.
  • this often includes giving criminals an education in order to help them get a job, so they no longer turn to crime.
