theories of evolution Flashcards
order of ideas of evolution
lamarcksim then dwarnism then punctuted equilibrium
what was the lamarckism theory of evolution idea of evolution
Individual organisms had the ability to change their appearance and that these changes would also occur in any offspring they produced. Lamarck propsed 2 laws, law of use and disuse and law of inheritance of acquired characteristics
explain law of use and disuse
the law of use and disuse states that body parts regurlarly used by organisms would better develop whilst parts that were scarcely use dwould shrink and may disappear alltogether in the offspring.
explain the law of inheritance of acquired characteristics
characteristics such as better developed limbs or shrinking limbs acquired by an organsm would be passed on to its offspring.
why was lamarks theory included in the study of evolution
- he gathered a lot of nfo fro diff organism, his scientific enquiry was excellent
- at his time it made sense therefore t needs to showed to show that ideas evolve
why was lamarcks theory rejected
- no evidence showing that acquired characteristics are inherited
- no evidence that structures used more often develop
- nature allows organism to change and not because organisms want to change
explain Darwanism
there is a huge variation amongst offsprings of an organism. some offsprings will have favourable characteristics to the environment while other will have unfavorable. the favourable characteristics help that offspring to better survive while the unfavourable will eventually die out because they more easily die. the environment acts as the mechanism to encourage changes in the dominant characteristics.
explain punctuated equillibrium
this is a form of evolution that happens in a short period of time where a sudden change in environment such as a catastrophic event will cause a rapid change in an organisms characteristics
what is artificial selction
artificial selection is when humans select desirable characteristics in plants or animals to have those aprticular characteristics
