Needs Theory
David McClelland – All people have 3 types of motivation: the need for achievement, the need for affiliation, the need for power
Attribution Theory
Seeks to understand how people explain events through cause and effect relationships
Self Determination Theory
Intrinsic Motivation does not happen in Isolation.
3 psychological needs must be met: Competence, relatedness, autonomy
Behaviorist Learning Theories
BF Skinner, John Watson – behavior is a result to response to an environmental stimulus
Cognitive Theory
Piaget – Both biological maturation and a child’s own interaction with the environment determine overall development (stages: Sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, formal operational)
Maturational Theory
Gisell – all children go through the same sequential stages of development but at different rates (idea of “natural” maturation)
