Neofunctionalism

Thesis: states are not the only important actor on the international scene and that political integration is determined as inevitable.
Focus: spillover and socialisation
Actors: focuses on the role of supranational institutions/Non-state actors
Spillover: situation in which cooperation in one field necessitates cooperation in another
Elite integration: people involved in integration process tend to develop preferences and loyalties
Liberal Intergovernmentalism
Scholar: Moravscik ‘The Choice for Europe’
Thesis: integration within the EU revolves around state interests, usually economically based (rational/realist POV)
Actors: focuses on MS
Europeanisation
Prominent concept in understanding the relationship maintained between member states and the EU in looking at the impact of the EU on domestic changes in policy and day-to-day life e.g. the Euro and JHA
Neo-Institutionalism
Scholar: Easton
Looks at how much institutions matter and how supranational an institution is
