Strengths - Open-ended means there’s detailed data, reliability, large sample, closed-ended means it’s easy to quantify, detachment.
Limitations - Participants may lie, right answerism, lack of rapport and someone other than intended participant may respond.
Interviews
Strengths - In-depth detailed data, structured are reliable and hard to quantify.
Limitations - Demand characteristics, small sample, group means peer group influence and unstructured means unreliable.
Observations
Strengths - In-depth detailed data and verstehen.
Limitations - Hawthorne effect, hard to quantify, small sample and unreliable.
Experiments
Strengths - Reliable and allows for causation to be determined.
Limitations - Validity decreased in lab, researchers effects and small sample.
Official statistics
Strengths - Large sample, valid and reliable.
Unofficial statistics
Strengths - Large sample, valid and reliable.
Limitations - Could be subjective to views of organisation.
Personal, public and historical documents
Strengths - In depth and detailed.
Limitations - Unreliable, open to interpretation and biased/personal opinion.
Content analysis
Strengths - Reliable.
Limitations - Open to interpretation.
