Purpose of the Law
Romans 3:20 ESV
To make us aware of our sinfulness and need of salvation.
“For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin”.
Purpose Gospels
John 20:31
To beleive in Jesus Christ and have life in His name
“but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
Purpose Scripture
2 Timothy 3:16–17
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
What is “special revelation” and how has God revealed Himself to man?
There are four means of special revelations.
1. Direct
2. Dreams & Visions
3. Jesus Christ
4. Scripture
Direct “And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden,” (Genesis 2:16, ESV)
Dreams & Visions “And he said, “Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the LORD make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream.” (Numbers 12:6, ESV)
Jesus Christ “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.” (Hebrews 1:1–2, ESV)
“knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:20–21, ESV)
What is General Revelation and Why is it important?
General revelation is the knowledge of God that all people have in creation and the internal moral law written upon their hearts. This means that all men are guilty of rejecting God, even if they have not heard the gospel message. General revelation is never saving revelation.
Romans 1:18-20 & 2:14-15; Ps 19:3-4
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:18–20, ESV)
“For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them” (Romans 2:14–15, ESV)
