Theology Flashcards

1
Q

What is meant by Christ’s active and passive obedience?

A

His active obedience is fulfilling all righteousness by living a perfect life of obedience for us. His passive obedience is submitting to the curse of God and the cross. His righteousness is imputed to us because of his active obedience and our sin is imputed to him because of his passive obedience.

Q

Explain covenant theology. Are there differences in the administration of the various covenants? Of law, works, grace?

A

Covenant theology views the entire Bible as one story revealing the redemption of man through Christ. God made a covenant with man to be their God and they to be his people. This covenant was reiterated through different administrations (Noah, Moses, David, the Prophets) but has always remained of grace.
The Covenant of Works was made to Adam and Eve before the Fall. The Covenant of Grace was made to them after the fall (Gen 3:15).

Q

Explain Jeremiah 17:9 and how does it affect your preaching.

A

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
We are preaching to broken and sinful people who have been redeemed. There is a struggle in the lives of every believer between their sin nature and new nature. Only the power of the Spirit through His Word can renew their minds. This causes all of us to rely upon Him and the Word to do the work of building us up. The preacher is just as fallable as the congregation.

20
Q

Explain typology and how it affects/applies to your preaching.

A

God works in recurring patterns throughout history and says that a past event or person can prefigure or serve as a type of a future person or event. In the antitype, a future person or event more fully expresses the truth of what came before. This affects the preaching of the OT in that each pericope points to the person and work of Christ in his fulfillment of all the OT promises.
