theology is the treatise, science (study) of God
and it is of Greek origin
what was the term used by early christians?

what is it known as now?
it is now understood as the methodical and structured exposition of the revelation accepted by faith
how can we approach the truths of revelation?
Through faith
how does the theology reveal these truths to an extent?
these truths are revealed are intelligible ,that is, as capable of ever greater understanding.
what is faith?
faith is assenting to a truth that’s worthy of being believed.
what is the formal motive of faith?
the authority of God
what does st. Augustine affirm?
“you have to understand to believe and you have to believe to understand”
what does st. Augustine always see novelty?
“let us seek as they seek those who have not yet found and let us find as they find those who have yet to seek”
how does st. Anselm of Canterbury understand theology?
he understands theology as the faith that seeks to understand , not out of curiosity but out of love

what is man?
Man is the most mysterious and the most disconcerting of the objects discovered by science. (Teilhard de Chardin)
classical conception of Man
It has its roots in Greco-Roman culture and has largely dominated al of our western culture. It cannot be said that ti is an outdated, forgotten vision of man, and even less that it should be rejected. There are also deviations.
Three are the characteristic features of this conception of man.
What is the first characteristic?
It conceives man primarily as a ‘rational being.’
The value of intelligence is exalted as a human distinctive as opposed to animals, the emotional and active dimensions of the person are forgotten or in the background.
