Examples of Themistocles being cunning
sends messenger to Xerxes to tell him that “he is a supporter of the king and wants you to win”
-> manages to get the Persians to do the battle where he wants it, rather than wait for other Greeks to reached deliberations (does it behind people’s backs - “sneaked out of the assembly”)
keeps Xerxes on his side in case he needs it
“he wanted to have a claim on the king’s gratitude in the future so that if he fell out of favour with the Athenians he would have somewhere to escape to”
Good tactical planner
Believes Salamis sea battle is best idea (and he is write) so he deliberately tells Xerxes “the Greeks have given up” in order to guarantee that the battle happens where he wants it to

gets given good speeches that are carefully planned out
correctly interprets oracle about “wooden walls”
