A

sends messenger to Xerxes to tell him that “he is a supporter of the king and wants you to win”

-> manages to get the Persians to do the battle where he wants it, rather than wait for other Greeks to reached deliberations (does it behind people’s backs - “sneaked out of the assembly”)

keeps Xerxes on his side in case he needs it
“he wanted to have a claim on the king’s gratitude in the future so that if he fell out of favour with the Athenians he would have somewhere to escape to”
