Themes of biology Flashcards
What is the study of biology?
the scientific study of life
Gene
Genes are the discrete units of inhereditry information consisting of specific nucleotide sequence in DNA
Gene expression
The process by which information is encoded in DNA directs the synthesis of proteins
Producer
Organism that produces organic compounds from c02 by harnessing light energy or oxidizing inorganic chemicals
Consumer
Organism that feeds on producers, other consumers or non-living organic material.
Taxonomy
The scientific discipline concerned with naming and classifying the diverse life forms.
Evolution
The process of biological changes a species accumulates over time frim past generation to adapt to enviroment
Natural Selection
scientific theory that states an individual that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and reproduce at a higher rate than other individuals because of the those traits.
Feedback regulation
The regulation of a process by its output or end product.
Inductive reasoning
A type of logic in which specific results are predicted from a general premise
Deductive reasoning
A type of logic in which generalization are based on a large number of specific observations
Hypothesis
Testable explanation from a set of observation based on available data and quided by inductive reasoning
Independent Variable
The factor in an experiment being tested
Dependent Variable
The factor being measured that is predicted to be affected by the independent variable
Theory
An explanation that is broder in scope than a hypothesis generates new hypothesis and is supported by large bodies of evidence
