Q

The Nurse is forever making sexual puns and innuendoes. She repeats with relish her husband’s joke when the baby Juliet falls down:

‘’A was a merry man – took up the child.
‘Yea,’ quoth he, ‘dost thou fall upon thy face?
Thou wilt fall backward when thou hast more wit.
Wilt thou not, Jule?’ (I.3.41–4)
The point of the joke is, of course, that Juliet will lie on her back when a man makes love to her. The Nurse anticipates the sexual pleasures of Juliet’s wedding night with Romeo (II.5.75) and with Paris (IV.5.5–7) with the same glee. Why is this important?

A

Radiantly love is to be courtship but Shakespeare is represented it as crude and saying the only thing that matters between a man and a women is sex.
