What is crime?
Action that breaks the law; against a person, property or state
What is treason?
Crime against the state
What are the 6 causes of crime?
Addiction, greed, upbringing, hate crime, unjust law and mental illness
What is hate crime?
A crime committed because of prejudice views about a group of people
What is unjust law?
A legal requirement within a society that is believed to be unfair; a cause of crime if a person believes they cannot follow, a law they believe is unjust
What are the aims of punishment?
Deterrence, reformation and retribution
What is deterrence?
The threat of punishment as a way to put a person off committing crime
What is reformation?
Helping the criminal see how and why their behaviour is wrong, so that their mindset changes for the better; rehabilitation
What is retribution?
Getting the criminal back for their crimes
What are 3 ways of treating criminals?
Prison, community service and corporal punishment
What is corporal punishment?
Punishment in which physical pain is inflicted on the criminal
What is the difference between corporal and capital punishment?
Corporal is inflicting pain without killing, but capital is the execution of criminals
What is the principle of utility?
The concept of acting out of the greater good for most people, like removing dangerous criminals from society
What is the sanctity of life?
Belief that life is sacred as it was created by God
What are Christian and Muslim views to different types of crime?
They are against hate crime and murder as they believe God created all humans with equal value so no individuals should be singled out for inferior treatment from others. Muslims also believe this
