4. Steinbeck’s perspective on dreams through the novella seems to be that, while these dreams may not work out, they are essential because they give us the hope to keep on going.

1. Of Mice and Men depicts two itinerate workers out of millions, who just like the rest, are following the American Dream. The American Dream is the belief that America is a land of oppurtunity, and this is rooted in the Decleration of Independence. This states that “all men are created equal” and everybody has the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”.
2. However, the aspirations of George and Lennie for a brighter future seem to be forever eclipsed by harsh inevitabilities inherent in the lives of itinerate workers.
3. Throughout the novella George and Lennie frequently discuss their dream, and this dream is such a powerful source of hope in draws in Candy and Crooks.
4. Whether they believe in the dream or not, it provides them with a fantasy that allows them to escape the harsh realities of life on the ranch.
