What is the Christian belief about Human Rights and Social Justice?
- Christians believe that God created everyone equally
- God is the God of justice - we have a duty to be just and care for all
- ‘Love thy neighbour’ - Jesus taught Christians to care for one another
- ‘Faith without action is dead.” Christians have a duty to promote social justice
What is the Muslim belief about Human Rights and Social Justice?
- Muslims regard it as their religious and social responsibility to work for justice and just causes.
- Muslims believe that justice is a virtue.
- Giving money to the poor is a central part of Islam. (Zakah or alms-giving/ One of the 5 pillars)
- Muslims believe that we should do unto others what you would have them do to you

What are Christian views on Religious Freedom?
- Christianity teachings encourage tolerance and harmony.
- Christians believe it is a fundamental human right.
- Jesus tought religous freedom
- Religious freedom is encouraged as it is a part of God’s design
What are Muslim views on Religious Freedom?
- Muslims promote tolerance
- Some Muslim countries allow Christians and Jews to worship as they are ‘People of the Book’- they are accepted because they follow the revelations of God
- In some countered, like Pakistan, blasphemy laws exist to make it illegal for Muslim to critise the Qur’an or the Prophets
- Some Muslims believe Islam does not teach intolerance towards one another and people should be free to practise their faith.

- In Britain today, the official state religion is Christianity (The Church of England)
- The government protects freedom of religious expression
- Nobody can be forced into a faith or to join the church

- Christians believe humans are important and special because we have been created in God’s image.
- Christians believe people are different but are equal in value and can have a relationship with God.
- Christians are encouraged to treat everyone as equals.
- Jesus says ‘Love thy neighbour as yourself.’

- Islam teaches that God created everyone and therefore are of equal value
- Muhammad said that ‘People are as equal as teeth of a comb.’
- People are only judged on how well they live their life in obedience to God
- Muslims believe people are different but are equal in value

- The Qur’an does not support racism.
- Muslims believe that people are judged on their actions not their race

- Against God’s command to increase in number - can’t reproduce
- Sexual relationships between me are forbidden in the Bible
- Homosexul marriages are not allowed to take place within a Church

- No detail on homosexual relationships between women as there is no penetrative sex
- Some Christians believe that Homosexual relationships are not sinful (as long as sex is not involved)
- Some believe Bible teachings need to be updated to this modern society - therefore making it acceptable

- Homosexuality is forbidden
- In Most Muslim countries it is against the law
- It is against the natural law of God
- It is against God’s will
- Some believe that homosexuals will have to answer to God on judgement day

- Most have no problem with women being a part of the clergy.
- Women funded Jesus’ mission.

- Jesus chose men to be his disciples.
- Catholic and Orthodox Churches do not support women becoming priests.

- Equal in value but different in their roles.
- Women are allowed to work if they want and many Muslim women in the UK are doctors, teachers etc.
- Some mosques allow women to lead worship.

- Men are allowed more than one wife.
- Women should stay at home and look after the children.
- In Saudi Arabia, women have to cover up if they leave their home and must be with a chaperone.
What does positive discrimination mean?
Treating people favourably because they have been discriminated against in the past or have disabilities.
What are Christians views on discrimation against the disabled?
- Christians oppose discrimination against the disabled
- It does not show Christian love (agape)
- Christians support positive discrimination as it helps those who need it.

- Muslims are taught to help those who need it.
- They are taught to look after the elderly and children including those with disabilities.
- Muslims agree with the use of positive discrimination.
- In the eyes of God we are all equal and therefore we should help all.
- Some Muslims believe that those who have a disability is because they have sinned against Allah and Allah has given them their punishment

- The Bible does not condemn people using their money on holidays and luxuries.
- The wealthy have a responsibility to give money to the church and pay for the mission.
- Jesus taught that the parable of the Rich man and Lazarus. Shows that we should help those who are needy and we will go to heaven.
What are Muslim views on wealth?
- Wealth and riches are a blessing from God and should be used to benefit everyone.
- Muslims who have money have a responsibility to look after the poor.
- Money should only be obtained lawfully. (Working, property and inheritance) Not gambling, selling alcohol or drugs and fraud.
- Islam teaches that it is the duty of the husband to take care of his family and give to charity if there is anything left over
- Zakah (charity) is one of the five pillars.
What are Christians views about Poverty?
- Encourage the poor to attempt to break out of poverty if they are able.
- Some do voluntary work to give them experiences and references.
- Christians believe that it is imprtant to help those who need assistance
- The bible says “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat’
- Christians encourage those who are addicts to seek her to stop them being in poverty. “For drunken and gluttons become poor.”
What are Muslim views about Poverty?
- Muslims are told to give generously to help the poor and needy through Zakah and Sadqah
- “Cure poverty with charity and giving generously.” Imam Ali
- Islam encourages people to work, if possible, so that they do not have to rely on others
- Islam also encourages careful budgeting to avoid poverty.

- Responsibility of looking after the world and those in it (stewardship)
- They have a duty to demonstrate compassion because Jesus taught ‘ Love thy neighbour as yourself.”
- Christianity encourages people to use their gifts and talents to get out of poverty- The parable of the talents.
- Some will buy Fairtrade to help promote fairness.

- Muslims believe they have a duty to help the needy wherever they are.
- In the Quran “Be good to your parents, to relatives, to orphans, to the needy”, Surah An-Nisa 4:36
