Mayor theme
An idea that the writer repeats in his work making it the most significant in a literary work
Minor theme
Refers to an idea that appears briefly
Themes in To kill a mocking bird
Racism/prejudice, injustice, poverty, growing up, fear, family, women and femininity, morality and ethics
Characterization
The method used by the author to portray a character
Dynamic character
Someone who undergoes an important/internal change because of the action in the plot
Theme
Main idea/underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly (examples: love and friendship, war, crime and mystery, revenge)
Static character
One whose personality doesn’t change throughout the events in the story’s plot
Flat character
We only see one side to their personality. They are not developed fully by the author
Round character
Some one for whom we see different sides to their personality. They are fully developed by the author.
Main character
The character central to the story
Minor or secondary character
Characters necessary to the story but who play a smaller role
Scout (Jean Louise) Finch
Main character, narrator, tomboy
Jem (Jeremy) Finch
Scout’s brother. 9 years old.
Atticus
Scout’s dad. About 50 years old. Lawyer
Calpurnia
She works at Scout’s house. She taught her how to read and write
Dill (Charles) Baker Harris
Scout’s and Jem’s friend. He only comes in summer. He’s from Mississippi
Jack (Jonh) Hale Finch
Scout’s uncle. 10 years younger than Atticus. Studied medicine
Aunt Alexandra Hancock
Uncle Jimmy’s wife, she thinks Atticus is bringing down the family by defending this case
Boo (Arthur) Radley
Mysterious neighbor. Only comes out at night. Mr. Radley’s son
Nathan Radley
Scout’s neighbor. Atticus thinks he was the one who gave them the presents and the blanket.
Walter Cunningham
A boy from school. He comes from a poor family they never take anything they can’t pay back. He never goes back to school after Christmas
Burris Ewell
A boy from Scout’s class. He only goes to school the first day. His mother died. Lack of personal hygiene
Caroline Fisher
Scout’s teacher. She hates scout because she already knows how to read and write
Mr. Avery
He’s a neighbor. Jem and Scout try to make a snowman of him
