Why do people obey the law?
Strong religious views or afraid of being caught and arrested or ruining reputation
What is the point of the law?
Life would be chaotic without it and people would suffer a lot.

Access to justice
Innocent until proven guilty

It protects our rights and freedom
Where does the law come from?
The main source is the legislation but it also comes from common law or the the EU
Difference between criminal and civil law

How do criminal courts work?
What are the 2 types of court
1)magistrates court:where civil cases are held and max sentance is 6months no jury.
2)crown court: serious cases are held and more formal
How are civil disputes solved?
Tribunals are used for work based problems and mediation which is someone who helps both side work out the problem and come to an agreement
What are the different types of sentencing?
-discharge:a person not punished unless they commit another offence
-fine:
-community sentance:sentance which allows people to live in community under certain conditions
-prison
What is a youth court
If offence is serious there will be trial in a youth court

Why and how do crime rates change
Many people re-offend if they have been in prison
How can we reduce crime
-neighbourhood watch
-supporting children
-reducing access to alcohol and rugs
