- marriage is a sacrament that reflects the sacrificial love of Jesus and an agreement before God where couples promise to live faithfully together until death

Catholic view - marriage is a sacrament that is permanent
- they can separate but can’t remarry someone else in a Catholic Church while their partner is alive

- allow divorce and remarriage in church as long as couple takes vows seriously
- believe church should reflect the forgiveness of God and allow people to find happiness in a second marriage
