What is a community?
A community is a group of people who are in close contact who share common interests and values
What is a neighbourhood?
A neighbourhood is a local area where people live as neighbours sharing living space
How is a community different to a neighbourhood?
A community is a group of people that share the same interests or values, and not limited to living in certain areas like a neighbourhood
What are some examples of a community a person might belong to?
School, local neighbourhood, country, religious groups, sports clubs / teams
How do communities overlap?
Most people belong to more than one community and these communities could have the same values and interests and overlap
Add on for neighbourhood:
A neighbourhood in a village might be the whole of the village or small town but in a city a neighbourhood could be harder to locate
What factors effect what communities a person is in?
Religion, ethnicity, interests, participation in clubs
What is the importance of belonging to one or more communities?
Diverse social connections, makes everyone unique with their interests
What is immigration / migration?
Migration is the process of coming to another country to live or seek refuge there
What is emigration?
When a person leaves their home country to live in another
What has migration bought to the UK?
Diverse society
New: traditions / clothes / skills / languages
What is a census?
An official count of the population to understand the changes taking place within society - happens every 10 years in the UK
What are some reasons a person might migrate to the UK?
More economic / work / education opportunities
To escape war or conflict
Escaping persecution
What is a culturally diverse society?
A society that includes a variety of different ethnic groups and cultures
