What are the 5 indicators of development?
- Access to clean water

What are the 3 measurements of development
- Human development index
What does the HDI look at?
- Education- number of years
- Living standards- real GNI
- Health- life expectancy at birth
What is gross national income?
Gross Domestic Product plus the net income from abroad (remittances)
How is our final human development index calculated?
An average of each of the 3 scores (0 to 1) are found
What are the 2 advantages of the HDI?
- Holistic- so more reliable looks at the 3 most important development factors so more reliable than single indicators.
- Comparable- so can know which countries to send aid to
What are 2 disadvantages of the HDI?
- Unreliable as there are many indicators it does not use.
- Ignores distribution of development- making comparison harder.
What is the iHDI (inequality-adjusted HDI) value
Takes the normal HDI and then adjusts it to account for different levels of inequality. If the IHDI is below the HDI, then there is inequality.
What does the multidimensional poverty calculate?
- The number of people in poverty in a country
- The average intensity of poverty.
What does a high MPI show us?
A country has low levels of development
What is the multidimensional poverty index?
Measures education, health and living standard using 10 different indicators. It measures the number of people in poverty and the average intensity of poverty.
