What are the 5 Environmental reasons for the development gap?
- A poor climate
- Poor farming land
- Limited water supplies
- Lots of natural hazards

What are the 3 Social reasons for the development gap?
- Drinking water
- The place of women in society

What are the 3 Economic reasons for the development gap?
- Poor trade links
- Lots of debt
- An economy based on primary products
What is Bilateral aid?
Aid given directly to the recipiant
What is Multilateral Aid?
Where aid is given indirectly through an international organisation that distributes the aid
What is short term aid ?
Short term aid is money or recourses that help the recipient countries cope during emergencies eg. Floods
What are the advantages of short term aid ?
The aid has an immediate impact so more people will survive the emergency
What are the disadvantages of short term aid?
- The stage of development of the recipient country remains the same
- Aid may not reach those who need it because of things like theft and transportation problems
What is long term aid ?
Long term aid is money or resources that help recipient countries to develop
Give two examples of long term aid
- Dams and wells to improve clean water supplies.

What is an advantage of long term aid?
Over time recipient countries become less reliant on foreign aid as they become more developed
What is a disadvantage of long term aid ?
It can take a while before the aid benefits a country
Why is development so hard to measure?
Development is hard to measure because it includes a lot of factors
What is the Gross domestic product (GDP)?
The total value of goods and services a country produces in a year. It is a measure of wealth
What is GDP per capita?
Also called GDP per head which is a measure of wealth
What is Birth rate?
The number of live babies born per thousand of the population per year
What is Death rate?
The number of deaths per thousand of the population per year
What is Infant mortality rate?
The number of babies who die under 1 year old, per thousand babies born
What is people per doctor?
The average number of people for each doctor, this is a measure of access to health care
What is Literacy rate?
The percentage of adults who can read and write, this measures the access to education
What is access to clean water?
The percentage of people who can get clean drinking water, this is a measure of sanitation
What is life expectancy? And what is it a measure of ?
The average age a person can live to, it is a measure of quality of and access to healthcare
What is the physical quality of life index (PQLI)
This is a number calculated using life expectancy, literacy rate and infant mortality rate
What is calorie intake? And what does this measure?
The average number of calories eaten per day, this measures access to a healthy and varied diet
