Theme 3A Flashcards
Who was Georges Cuvier?
Some species survive while others go extinct, existence of fossilized bones from species no longer existing
Who was Charles Lyell?
The earth must be much older than believed, and undergoing change. Landforms form gradually from geological processes
Who was Jean-Baptiste Lamarck?
- Believed in transmutation (species changed over time)
- Acquired traits can be inherited, and can be lost through disuse (inheritance of acquired characteristics)
Who was Thomas Malthus?
Human populations grow faster than resources available (survival of the fittest). Those who are better suited to compete are more likely to survive.
When is evolution in response to natural selection inevitable?
- There is variation in a trait
- Variation is heritable
- Some variants survive and reproduce more than others
- Specific features of the environment can generate natural selection on a trait
What is adaptive radiation?
A process in which organisms diversify rapidly from ancestral species into many new forms
Can natural selection occur without heritability?
Yes it can. However evolution by natural selection cannot
