What does evil as a consequence of sin mean?

A
  • Evil did not come from God as Gods creation was perfect
  • God made everyone ex nihilo
  • Humans and angels are from the created order and so they are susceptible to change and have the ability to turn away from God
  • The turning away from God is an act of free will, is what causes evil

What are the challenges to the Augustinian theodicies?

A
  • Genesis (has to be taken literally for it to work)
  • Errors (would started chaotic and became perfect not the other way round)
  • Moral contradictions (Hell is part of design, how is that benevolent)
  • Scientific errors (biologically disproves seminal loins)
  • Acronym to remember = GEMS
18
Q

What are the strengths of the Augustinian theodicy?

A
  • Theme of predestination fits (biblical passages ‘written in Gods books)
  • Brian davies agrees evil is not a substance (gap between what there should be and what there ought to be)
  • Free will justify the risk of evil ( Can’t show goodness if no free will)
  • Aquinas different world idea (God could have created a better world but would not be ours, seems confused to say God creation should have created more than he has)
  • Acronym to remember = CARED
