theme 2 royal navy Flashcards
Naval tactics employed - age of sail
Age of sail - battles that were extensively defeated using sailing ships
Naval tactics improved significantly from the medieval period - before the main objective was to pull alongside the enemy vessel so the soldiers could board it
however, now the tactic was to pull alongside eg broadside and mount cannons .
Victorious ships had bigger spaces for guns
Three naval tactics
- enabled sustained bombardment each ship able to fire broadside
- Avoided friendly ships firing each other coz broadside is not facing the correct way
- reduces the exposure of vulnerable bows and sterns to enemy fire
- improved the speed and effectiveness by signalling flags between the admirals ships and the rest of the fleet
first and second rate ships - types of ships in the royal navy
They had 3 gun decks and could allow from 80 to 120 cannons.
they were used as flagships such as nelson’s 100 gun victory
but the extra gun power made the top heavy thus less manoverable
Third rate
less than 64 cannons but they soon became extinct coz they lacked sufficient gunpower
fifth and sixth rate
frigates, slightly shorter, and the single gun deck made them faster and more manoverable
they could operate independently
sailed globally - some of the best ships
the development of steam power- what was the consequences of the Napoleonic wars in relation to British’s position to maintain naval supremacy
royal navy ships reduced from 214 ships and 792 frigates to 100 ships and 162 frigates - however eventhough they lost ships they were able to maintain supremacy
