Why is love thy neighbour the most important teaching?
- It is directly taught by Jesus (Such as the Good Samaritan)
- Crossan stated that Jesus was a social revolutionary who helped those in need - which is loving thy neighbour
- Found in the OT (‘Love the alien as yourself’) so embedded all throughout the Bible
- St Paul (‘Faith, hope and the greatest of these is Love’)
Why isn’t love thy neighbour the most important teaching?
- Comes second to loving God (‘Love your God with all your heart, and all your soul, and all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself’)
- Imposes a impossible and challenging standard - Stirner suggested ethical egoism where you act in your own self interest
- Giving to the poor and needy is also shown in the Bible so may be more important/equally important
Why is God’s behaviour the only model for human moral behaviour?
- God is perfect and so we should follow their behavior
- God’s behaviour can be seen in the 10 commandments and these should be followed
- Only model to follow as they show love to sinners and outcasts (E.g Jesus on the cross)
Why isn’t God’s behaviour the only model for human moral behaviour?
- For Catholics it is the behaviour of God and how it is interpreted by the church (They have the catechism)
- Not just God but the commands the Trinity has given (Jesus and love thy neighbour)
- God has shown anger and jealousy (God told Abraham to kill his son, Joshua and Jericho)
