What is a settlement?
A settlement is a group of dwellings and that is any form of human habitation.
What are the 3 different settlement patterns?
The 3 different settlement patterns are:
1. Dispersed settlements
2. Linear settlements
3. Nucleated settlements
Define, in 2 points, a dispersed settlement, as a pattern of settlement.
A dispersed settlement can be i. an isolated building or ii. a group of buildings forming a hamlet, seperated by two or three kilometres.
Explain the occurance of dispersed settlements.
Dispersed settlements occur in areas of adverse physical difficulty where natural resources are not enough to support more than a few people.
Define a linear settlement, as a pattern of settlement.
A linear settlement is one in which buildings are strung along lines of communication such as roads or river valleys.
Define a Nucleated settlement, as a pattern of settlement.
A nucleated settlement is one in which buildings are grouped together, especially around a central point such as a crossroads.
Explain, in 3 points the occurence of nucleated settlements.
Nucleated settlements i. originally occured as a form of defense, ii. but would also develop where there was enough farmland to support other inhabitants, iii. and where there was sufficient water supply.
Nucleated settlements are 5 - 10 km apart.
How far apart are nucleated settlements?
Nucleated settlements are 5 - 10 km apart.
