The act of concentrating on a particular product or task
Where can specialisation occur?
Within business - Manufacturing particular part of a product
Region of a country - Certain area focused on certain product
Within a country - Focused on native produce in high demand
What is the division of labour?
Specialisation on an individual level
Production broken down into smaller tasks
Raises output as workers proficient through repetition
What are the advantages to a business?
Workers efficient, promotes profit + growth
Productivity increases, outcompete rivals
Workers are experts, higher quality produce
Time saved
Training costs reduced
Variety for consumer
What are the disadvantages to a business?
Repetitive tasks may reduce morale + motivation of workforce
Workers too inflexible
Workers may refuse lower income jobs
Quality suffers if workers become dissatisfied
What are the advantages to a country?
Trade may increase, more produce available to export
Productivity increases, outcompete rivals
What are the disadvantages to a country?
Less self-sufficient
May become reliant on other nations
What are the advantages to an employee?
Higher wages due to increased productivity + profit
Skills improve
What are the disadvantages to an employee?
Repetitive tasks may cause them to lose motivation
Skills may suffer
May become replaces by machines
