What is the definition of Ledership
The action of leading a group of people or an organisation, or the ability to do this
To lead: to be in charge of, to show direction, to be superior to others
What is the definition of management ?
The process of dealing with or controlling things or people, the responsibility for and control of a company or organisation
To manage: to supervise, to be in charge of, to maintain control over resource
Whats the difference between Leadership and Management ?
Leadership:
• Innovators – encourage others to accept change
• Natural abilities and instincts
• Respected and trusted by followers
• Inspires others
• Motivates
• Original
• Develops others
• Wins followers
• Creates change
Management:
• Directing and monitoring others • Problem solver
• Official position of responsibility • Plans
• Organises
• Co-ordinates
• Maintains
• Has employees
• Manages change
What are the 4 different types of leadership style ?
- Autocratic
- Democratic
- Paternalistic
- Laissez-Faire
What is autocratic leadership and where is it usually found in ?
• This style is used when leaders tell their employees what they want done and how they want it accomplished, without getting the advice of their followers
• There is little or no consultation on decisions in a manager who uses an autocratic leadership style
• Staff are told what to do
• The autocratic leadership style is most often found in factories, fast food businesses, and the police
• Direct orders are given and are to be followed
• Views and opinions of subordinates are not taken into account by managers who just issue orders and expect them to be followed
What is democratic leadership and
• Democratic leaders offer guidance to group members, but they also participate in the group and allow input from other group members.
• Employees have a higher degree of participation in the business and are allowed to collaborate on the decision making process
• Staff are involved
The leader who uses democratic style, may also consult with staff on decision making
What is the paternalistic leadership style ?
Pater was an old word for father so paternal means showing kindness like a father - could also be for a woman
A leader who is paternalistic - makes the right decisions for the employees that they are responsible for
In this leadership there is a dominant authority figure that expects loyalty and trust from their employees
What is the laissez-fair style of leadership ?
This style of leadership is where employees can carry out activities and makes decisions freely
They can work in a very relaxed environment and have little direction and guidelines
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Laissez-faire ?
Advantages:
Superb in creative environments such as web designers or artists
Disadvantages:
Lack of supervision - may lead to poor productivity and lack of motivation
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Autocratic leadership style ?
Also give an example of where this style is appropriate
Advantages:
- Quick decision making
Disadvantages:
- Does not allow other peoples opinions
- Workers may become demotivated
In Crisis situations
Less skilled workers
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Democratic ? Also give an example of where this style is most appropriate
Advantages:
- Employees feel valued
- Good ideas
Disadvantages:
- Decision making takes longer
Workers cooperatives
What is an autocratic manager ?
Autocratic managers keep most of the authority to themselves - they do not delegate much or share information with employees - they tend to tell employees what to do
What are democratic managers ?
Democratic managers take views of their subordinates into account when making decisions.
Whats a paternalistic manager ?
A paternalistic manager believes he or she knows the best for employees - paternalistic managers tend to tell employees what to do but they will often explain their decisions - they are also concerned about the social needs of the employees
